What Are Fleas?
Fleas are tiny, wingless insects that survive by feeding on animal or human blood. They are about 1/8 to 1/12 of an inch long, brown or black in color, and can move quickly between fur, feathers, or clothing. Fleas typically find hosts by detecting body heat and movement, and while they prefer animals, they may bite people if animal hosts are unavailable.
Why Is This Important?
Flea bites can cause discomfort, itchiness, and irritation. In rare cases, fleas can transmit diseases such as cat scratch disease or tapeworms. While most fleas in the United States prefer animals, people may be bitten when sharing space with infested animals or environments.
How to Detect Fleas
- Look for small, dark insects in bedding, carpets, or pet areas.
- Flea bites often appear as small, red, itchy bumps, usually on the legs or ankles.
- Check pets for excessive scratching or visible fleas in their fur.
Tips for Managing and Preventing Fleas
- Vacuum regularly: Carpets, rugs, and furniture should be vacuumed often. Empty vacuum bags outside to prevent re-infestation.
- Clean bedding: Wash pet bedding and your own bedding frequently with soap and water.
- Keep pets flea-free: Consult your veterinarian for appropriate flea prevention and treatment for your pets.
- Outdoor care: Mow lawns regularly and avoid over-watering to reduce humid environments where fleas thrive.
- Remove debris: Clear brush, rock piles, and clutter from around your home to reduce flea habitats.
- Limit contact with wild animals: Store pet food securely and discourage stray animals from entering your property.
